Der Mamangam Pillayar Kovil gehört zu den ältesten und am meisten verehrten Hindu-Tempeln in Batticaloa und der Ostprovinz und liegt nur wenige Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum entfernt in der Nähe des Mamangam-Gebiets. Es ist Lord Ganesh (Pillayar) gewidmet und ein aktiver Ort der Verehrung mit bunt bemalten Schreinen und Gopuram. Während des jährlichen Wagenfestes (Thear) zieht es große Menschenmengen an.

Geschichte

Local tradition traces the temple's origins to around the 2nd-3rd centuries AD, linking it in legend to Prince Rama's worship of Lord Shiva and to the Dravidian queen Aadakasavundary of the Mattakalappu chronicles. Long known as Maamanga Eashwara, the shrine later became associated with Pillayar (Ganesh). Its week-long chariot festival, held in June or July, is one of the major religious events of the region.
