Dematamal Viharaya est un complexe de temples paisibles situé dans le village d'Okkampitiya, près de Buttala, centré sur un stupa comptant parmi les plus anciens du Sri Lanka. Le dagoba blanchi à la chaux, la vieille maison d'images et le terrain ombragé en font une visite calme et contemplative, loin des foules touristiques. La renommée du temple repose autant sur sa légende que sur son antiquité, et il reste un lieu de culte actif pour la communauté rurale environnante.

Histoire

The stupa is traditionally dated to the 2nd century BCE, making it one of the earliest on the island. Local tradition holds that the warrior prince Dutugemunu took refuge here after a quarrel with his brother Saddhatissa, giving the temple its name, said to derive from a phrase meaning 'shall not harm my brother', a story cherished in the district's Buddhist heritage.
