Aperçu

À l'extrémité sud de l'ancienne ville, près de la digue du vaste réservoir Parakrama Samudra, se dresse une figure grandeur nature sculptée en haut-relief sur un grand rocher de granit. D'environ 3,4 mètres de haut, le personnage barbu tient ce qui pourrait être un manuscrit en feuille de palmier ou un joug, et est largement considéré comme représentant le roi Parakramabahu le Grand, bien que certains érudits suggèrent un sage tel que Pulasti. Juste au sud se trouve le Potgul Vihara, un bâtiment circulaire en briques qui aurait été une ancienne bibliothèque ou un sanctuaire. Le cadre au bord du réservoir semblable à la mer est l’un des plus atmosphériques de Polonnaruwa.

Histoire

The statue and the Potgul Vihara date to the 12th century, the era of King Parakramabahu I, who created the Parakrama Samudra by uniting several older reservoirs into one of the largest ancient tanks in the country. The identity of the figure has never been settled, but its association with the king who transformed the city has made it an enduring symbol of Polonnaruwa. It forms part of the UNESCO-listed Ancient City.
