Sri Lanka's hiking sweet spot sits between 1,000 and 2,400 metres, where tea estates, cloud forest and grassland plateaus stack walk after walk into a wonderfully compact area. Base yourself in Ella for the easy classics — Little Adam's Peak takes an hour, Ella Rock a half day — then head higher to Horton Plains, where a 9 km loop crosses misty moorland to the 870-metre drop of World's End. Start before 6am; the view clouds over by mid-morning.
For wilder country, the Knuckles Range and Riverston offer ridge walks, hidden villages and far fewer walkers, while Adam's Peak is the island's great night hike — join pilgrims on the lamplit staircase for sunrise, December to May. How hard is the Adam's Peak climb?
It is a stiff but non-technical stair climb: about 5,500 steps gaining 1,000 metres, taking two and a half to four hours up. Anyone reasonably fit can do it — start around 2am for sunrise, bring warm layers for the windy summit, and expect crowds on poya full-moon nights.
Do you need a guide to hike in Sri Lanka?
Not for the Ella classics or Horton Plains, where paths are obvious and busy. A local guide is strongly recommended in the Knuckles Range and around Riverston, where trails are unmarked, weather shifts fast and guides cost only $15–40 a day.
