Negombo

Negombo

A lively west-coast beach town beside a fish-rich lagoon, famous for its 'Golden Mile' sands, Catholic churches and easy proximity to the international airport.

Overview

Negombo is the largest town in the Gampaha District and the most popular traveller base on Sri Lanka's west coast, thanks to its long beach and its position just 10 km from Bandaranaike International Airport. A busy fishing port wrapped around a broad lagoon, it is nicknamed 'Little Rome' for its many Catholic churches, a legacy of Portuguese missionary influence. Colourful outrigger boats crowd the lagoon and the morning fish market, while the palm-lined beach strip is packed with guesthouses, seafood restaurants and cafes. It makes a relaxed first or last stop on any Sri Lankan trip.

History

A natural harbour on the cinnamon-trading coast, Negombo was fought over by the Portuguese and Dutch, who prized the region's cinnamon. The Dutch captured it in 1640, rebuilt the fort and dug the network of canals, including the Hamilton Canal, still used by lagoon fishermen today. Centuries of Catholic missionary activity gave the town its large Christian community and its many churches, and it grew into a major fishing centre and, after the airport opened nearby, a gateway resort town.
