Coconut Tree Hill
A palm-topped headland jutting into the sea at Mirissa, one of the most photographed spots on the south coast.
A relaxed south-coast beach town famous for its crescent bay, whale-watching trips and the palm-crowned Coconut Tree Hill.
Mirissa is one of the south coast's most popular beach resorts, set around a curving palm-fringed bay in the west of Matara District. From November to April it is Sri Lanka's premier launch point for whale watching, with boats heading out before dawn in search of blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins. Back on land, a strip of guesthouses, seafood shacks and beach bars lines the sand, while the much-photographed Coconut Tree Hill and the quieter surf beach at Weligama lie just along the coast. It is a laid-back place to swim, surf and watch the sunset.
Long a small fishing village on the coconut-fringed south coast, Mirissa grew into a backpacker and beach destination from the 1990s onward. Like much of the coast it was damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and rebuilt, and in the years since it has become internationally known as the country's main base for blue-whale watching in the deep waters off Dondra Head.
