概述

贾夫纳堡是一座庞大的珊瑚和石灰岩堡垒，位于泻湖边缘，呈经典的星形布局，拥有宽阔的城墙、护城河和堡垒。它曾经因内战而遭到严重破坏，现已部分修复，现在，它的城墙提供了微风徐徐的步道，可以欣赏到水域和城镇的广阔景色。里面有殖民时期建筑的遗迹、被毁的格鲁特柯克教堂和正在进行的保护工程。这是一个大气、不拥挤的地方，可以吸收贾夫纳多层次的过去。

历史

The fort was first built by the Portuguese in 1618 and then captured and hugely expanded by the Dutch from 1658 into the massive star fort seen today, making it the second-largest fort in Sri Lanka after Galle. The British took it in 1796 and used it into the 20th century. It saw heavy fighting and destruction during the civil war and has since undergone extensive restoration.
