历史
The area rose to prominence when King Kashyapa I moved his capital to Sigiriya between 477 and 495 CE, building a palace and elaborate water gardens atop and around the rock. After his reign the site served as a Buddhist monastery for centuries before being abandoned to the jungle, and it was rediscovered and documented by British antiquarians in the 19th century. Sigiriya was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

- Buy tickets and start the rock climb right at 07:00; the exposed staircases get hot and congested by mid-morning.
- Pair Sigiriya Rock with nearby Pidurangala Rock, an easier climb that gives the classic view of the Lion Rock itself.
- Carry water, sun protection and sturdy shoes for the steep metal staircases; the ascent is not suitable for those with vertigo.
- Base here for a Minneriya or Kaudulla safari, best from June to September during 'The Gathering' of elephants.
- Watch for hornets on the rock: stay quiet near the fresco gallery and follow the marked calm-zone signs.
