A wide, roaring cascade tumbling down the hillside on the road below Ella, tied to the legend of the demon king Ravana.

Overview

One of the widest and best-known waterfalls in Sri Lanka, Ravana Falls plunges roughly 25 m down a rocky face divided into several cascades, swelling dramatically during the wet season. It sits right beside the main road down from Ella towards Wellawaya, making it an easy stop, with a small pool at the base where visitors sometimes cool off.

History

The falls take their name from Ravana, the demon king of the Ramayana epic, who according to legend held the princess Sita captive in caves in this region. The nearby Ravana Cave is likewise woven into the same body of local mythology.
