7-Day Sri Lanka Tour
The classic loop: ancient rock fortresses, tea country and the south coast in one unhurried week.
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first Sri Lanka tour. Distances are short — most legs are two to four hours by car or train — so one week genuinely covers the island's three signature landscapes: the ancient cities of the Cultural Triangle, the cool green tea country around Ella, and the beaches and colonial forts of the south coast.
This itinerary runs the classic clockwise loop. You land in Colombo, head straight for Sigiriya to climb the rock fortress at dawn, spend a day among Kandy's temples and botanical gardens, then ride the famous blue train through the tea fields to Ella. From the hills you drop south for a late-afternoon safari at Yala, where leopard and elephant sightings are a real possibility, and finish with two easy days around Galle Fort and the swimming bays of Unawatuna before the short expressway run back to the airport.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1
Arrive Colombo, drive to Sigiriya
Land at Bandaranaike International, meet your driver and head up-country (about 4 hours). Settle into a lakeside guesthouse and watch the sun set behind the rock.

Day 2
Sigiriya Rock at dawn
Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress early to beat the heat and the crowds, then spend the afternoon on a village tour or an optional elephant safari at a nearby national park.

Day 3
Kandy via the spice gardens
Drive south through Matale's spice gardens to Kandy (about 3 hours). Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at evening puja and stroll the lake at dusk.

Day 4
The blue train to Ella
Board the hill-country train for the most beautiful railway ride in Asia — tea terraces, cloud forest and mountain tunnels all the way to Ella (6–7 hours, book seats ahead).

Day 5
Ella walks, then south to Yala
Walk up Little Adam's Peak and out to Nine Arch Bridge in the morning, then wind down the escarpment to Tissamaharama, the gateway town for Yala (about 3 hours).

Day 6
Yala safari, on to the coast
Dawn game drive in Yala National Park — leopards, elephants, crocodiles and painted storks — then follow the coast road west to Unawatuna's calm swimming bay.

Galle Fort and departure
Morning wandering Galle Fort's Dutch ramparts, boutiques and cafés, then the expressway back to the airport (about 2.5 hours). Add beach days here if you have them.

Yes — because driving distances are short, seven days comfortably covers the classic loop of Sigiriya, Kandy, the Ella train, a Yala safari and Galle. You won't see everything, but you will see the island's three signature landscapes without rushing.

Do I need a driver or can I do this route by public transport?
Both work. The train covers Kandy to Ella beautifully, and buses reach everywhere else cheaply. A private driver saves time on the Sigiriya and Yala legs and is the usual choice for one-week trips.
When is the best time for this itinerary?
December to March is dry season across the whole route. The loop still works April to September — just expect afternoon showers in the south-west and consider swapping the beach finish to the east coast.
