Galle Fort
UNESCOA UNESCO World Heritage fortified old town of Dutch ramparts, churches and cobbled lanes jutting into the Indian Ocean.
A UNESCO-listed colonial port town on Sri Lanka's south coast, where a Dutch-built fort of ramparts, churches and boutique streets juts into the Indian Ocean.
Galle is the historic capital of Sri Lanka's southern coast, best known for its remarkably preserved 17th-century fort. Within the ramparts a grid of cobbled lanes holds Dutch-colonial villas, cafes, art galleries and boutique hotels, all ringed by seaward walls where locals gather at sunset. Beyond the fort lies a busy modern town with a cricket stadium, markets and a working harbour. It makes an easy and rewarding base for exploring the beaches and temples of the south.
Galle was an important port on ancient Indian Ocean trade routes and was fortified first by the Portuguese in 1588 and then extensively rebuilt by the Dutch from 1649. The British took control in 1796, and the fortified old town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 as the best-preserved example of a European-built fortified city in South and South-East Asia.
