Overview

Perched on the forested Rumassala headland west of Unawatuna, this white peace pagoda offers some of the finest coastal views in the area, taking in the bay, the ocean and distant Galle Fort. The site is peaceful and free to visit, reached by a steep footpath from the beach or a narrow access road. It pairs naturally with a walk down to nearby Jungle Beach.

History

The pagoda was built by Japanese Buddhist monks of the Nipponzan-Myohoji order and completed in 2005, one of a worldwide series of peace pagodas promoting non-violence.
