Day 1
Arrive, overnight Negombo
Land, transfer 20 minutes to Negombo's beach strip, shake off the flight with seafood by the lagoon.

Day 2
North to sacred Anuradhapura
Drive to Sri Lanka's first capital (about 4 hours). Cycle between 2,000-year-old stupas and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree in the cool of late afternoon.

Day 3
Mihintale and on to Sigiriya
Climb Mihintale, the birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhism, at sunrise, then continue to Sigiriya (1.5 hours) for a swim and an early night.

Day 4
Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala
The rock fortress at first light — frescoes, mirror wall, lion's paws — then sunset from Pidurangala Rock across the way for the postcard view of Sigiriya itself.

Polonnaruwa's medieval city
Day trip to Polonnaruwa (1 hour): the Royal Palace, the circular Vatadage and the serene carved Buddhas of Gal Vihara, best explored by bicycle.

Kandy, temple city
Drive to Kandy via the Dambulla cave temples (3.5 hours). Evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and a walk around the lake.

Tea country to Nuwara Eliya
Train or drive into the high tea country. Tour a working tea factory, then wander 'Little England's' colonial lanes in the crisp mountain air.

Down the escarpment past Rawana Falls to Tissamaharama, then an afternoon game drive in Yala National Park — the world's best odds of seeing wild leopard.

Mirissa, Galle and home
Morning whale watching at Mirissa in season, a sunset hour on Galle Fort's ramparts, then the expressway to the airport — or stay on and add beach days.
