Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle holds one of the densest concentrations of World Heritage anywhere on Earth: three ancient capitals, a fifth-century sky palace and Asia's finest cave temples, all within two hours' drive of each other. This six-day cultural tour covers the whole of it properly — not as photo stops, but with the dawn visits and slow afternoons these places reward.
The route moves chronologically through the island's story. It opens at Anuradhapura, the sacred city where Sri Lankan Buddhism began beneath a fig tree grown from a cutting of the Buddha's own Bodhi tree, and the hilltop monastery of Mihintale where it first arrived. Then medieval Polonnaruwa, explored by bicycle between palaces and the sublime carved Buddhas of Gal Vihara. Then Sigiriya, King Kasyapa's impossible fortress in the sky, climbed at first light. The painted caves of Dambulla bridge the drive south to Kandy, the last royal capital, where the trip closes with the evening drumming ceremony at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the botanical gardens the kings once kept.

Day 1
Anuradhapura, where it began
Straight from the airport to the first capital (4 hours). Late-afternoon cycle between the great stupas as the crowds thin and the brick glows.

Day 2
The sacred city in full
A full day among the monasteries: Jethawanaramaya's colossal dome, the twin ponds, moonstones and guard stones — with sunset from Mihintale's summit.

Day 3
To Sigiriya via the village tanks
A short hop south. Afternoon village walk among the ancient irrigation tanks that fed these kingdoms, then sunset from Pidurangala facing the rock.

Day 4
Sigiriya at dawn, Polonnaruwa by wheel
The lion staircase and frescoes at first light, then bicycles through Polonnaruwa's medieval quarter to the four Buddhas of Gal Vihara.

Day 5
Dambulla's painted caves, then Kandy
The five cave temples of Dambulla — 150 Buddhas under a ceiling of pure fresco — then the drive to Kandy for the evening temple ceremony.

Kandy's living traditions
Morning at Peradeniya's royal botanic gardens, craft workshops in the hills, a final temple visit — then onward to the hills, the coast or home.

What should I wear at the temples?
Shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off at shrines, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue. A sarong and a pair of slip-on shoes make the whole route easy.
