Unawatuna

Unawatuna

A laid-back beach village just south of Galle, wrapped around a curving palm-fringed bay with calm, swimmable water.

Overview

Unawatuna is one of the south coast's most popular beach resorts, set around a sheltered crescent bay about 5 km from Galle. Its calm, reef-protected water makes it good for swimming and snorkelling, while a strip of guesthouses, seafood shacks and beach bars lines the sand. The forested Rumassala headland at the western end hides quiet coves, a peace pagoda and rewarding coastal walks. It is an easy day trip or a relaxed base near Galle.

History

Long a fishing village, Unawatuna grew into a backpacker and tourist beach from the 1980s onward. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused heavy damage along the bay, after which the beach and its guesthouses were rebuilt, and the area remains known for the endangered purple-faced langur that lives on nearby Rumassala hill.
