The whole island stops for the astrological new year: firecrackers at the auspicious hour, tables of kavum and kokis sweets, oil-anointing ceremonies and village games from tug-of-war to greasy-pole climbing.

The island's greatest pageant: ten nights of fire dancers, whip-crackers, Kandyan drummers and a torch-lit parade of ornately robed elephants honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic. Grandstand seats and hotels sell out months ahead.

All-night vigils, chanting and pujas at the clifftop Koneswaram temple above the Indian Ocean — one of the most atmospheric nights of the Hindu calendar in Sri Lanka.

Tens of thousands of white-clad pilgrims climb Mihintale's 1,840 steps to mark the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in 247 BC. Anuradhapura's stupas are wrapped in light and dansal stalls line every approach road.

The Tamil harvest festival of thanksgiving to the sun god. Homes across the north and hill country draw kolam patterns and boil the first rice of the season in decorated clay pots — visitors are warmly invited to share it.

Twenty-five days of chariot processions, temple music and acts of devotion at Jaffna's golden-arched Murugan temple — the longest and most intense Hindu festival in Sri Lanka.

Oil lamps and kolam rice-flour art brighten Hindu homes and kovils across the north, the east and the tea country; sweets are exchanged and temples hold special pujas late into the night.
