Ratnapura

Overview
Ratnapura is the capital of Sabaragamuwa Province and the heart of Sri Lanka's gem country, its name meaning literally 'city of gems'. For centuries the alluvial gravels of the surrounding valleys have yielded sapphires, rubies, cat's eyes and other precious stones, and gem trading still fills the streets of the town. Ringed by wet-zone hills, waterfalls and the forests around Adam's Peak, Ratnapura is a green, humid and often rainy place that serves as a base for climbing Sri Pada by the classic Ratnapura pilgrimage trail, visiting the grand Maha Saman Devalaya, and exploring the edge of the Sinharaja rainforest to the south.
History
Gem mining around Ratnapura is documented back to antiquity, and stones from these valleys were traded along ancient Indian Ocean routes. The town grew around the Maha Saman Devalaya, dedicated to the god Saman, guardian deity of nearby Adam's Peak. The Portuguese built a fort and church on the shrine's grounds in the early 17th century, which were later destroyed when the Kandyan king Kirti Sri Rajasinha recaptured the region and rebuilt the devalaya. Under the British the surrounding hills were planted with tea and rubber, and Ratnapura remains both a plantation centre and the trading capital of the island's gem industry.
