Overview

The Asokaramaya (Asokarama Maha Vihara) is a tranquil temple complex in Kalutara North, a short distance from the town's beaches. Its whitewashed image houses shelter a reclining Buddha, colourful ceiling and wall paintings, and a peaceful stupa, making it a quieter alternative to the busy Kalutara Chaitya. It remains an active place of worship for the local community.

History

The temple traces its roots to the late 19th century, when the Buddhist monk Aluthgama Sangharatne established a hermitage near Kalutara, and it has served the surrounding community for well over a century. Its shrine rooms and paintings preserve traditional low-country temple art.
