A much-loved roadside Ganesha temple on the A9 where travellers stop to break a coconut and pray for a safe onward journey.

Overview

The Murukandy (Murikandy) Pillaiyar Kovil is a small but famous Hindu temple beside the A9 highway south of Kilinochchi, dedicated to Lord Pillaiyar (Ganesha), the remover of obstacles. For generations almost every traveller on the road to Jaffna has paused here to offer a prayer and break a coconut for a safe and lucky journey, giving the shrine its name from the Tamil for break. Brightly painted and constantly busy with passing devotees, it is a warm, living slice of Tamil roadside devotion.

History

The shrine is traditionally said to have been built in 1880 by a local devotee, Kathiresar Vaithiyalingam. Local legend tells of a holy man buried near the spot who, in gratitude, revealed a source of water to thirsty workers, who then raised a shrine here that has been venerated ever since as a place of protection for travellers.
