Overview

Angurukaramulla (Bodhirajaramaya) is Negombo's best-known Buddhist temple, easily recognised by the fearsome dragon-mouth archway through which visitors enter the shrine room. Inside, a large reclining Buddha and walls covered in colourful murals depict the Jataka stories of the Buddha's past lives. A tall standing Buddha statue rises over the grounds, and a small Hindu shrine sits behind the main temple, reflecting the area's mixed devotions.

History

The temple is several centuries old and has long served the Buddhist community of the Negombo area, which lies alongside the town's large Catholic population. Its distinctive dragon gateway and extensive mural cycle were added in the modern era, making it a popular stop for pilgrims and visitors.
