Kalkudah Beach, Pasikudah, Sri Lanka

A long, quiet stretch of sand just around the headland from Pasikudah, less developed and good for peaceful walks.

Overview

Kalkudah Beach is a wide, several-kilometre-long stretch of golden sand a short hop north of Pasikudah bay. More open to the sea and far less crowded than its neighbour, it offers long, peaceful walks, gentle surf and space to spread out. A handful of guesthouses and resorts sit behind the palms, and it makes an easy, quieter companion to a Pasikudah beach day.

History

Kalkudah was a popular resort beach before the 1980s but was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and by decades of civil conflict, which halted tourism. Since the war ended in 2009 it has gradually recovered, with new guesthouses and resorts reopening along the shore.
