The nearest sweep of golden sand to Trincomalee town, lined with guesthouses and calm swimming water.
Overview
Just a few kilometres north of the city, Uppuveli is Trincomalee's most convenient beach, a broad arc of soft sand backed by casual guesthouses, cafes and small resorts. The warm, gently shelving water is good for swimming from May to September, and boats leave from here for whale-watching and snorkelling trips. It is an easy sunset stroll and a relaxed base close to town.
History
Uppuveli, like the wider east coast, was badly hit by the 2004 tsunami and by decades of civil war; tourism has rebuilt steadily since 2009 into the small guesthouse scene seen today.
