मुलकिरिगाला दक्षिणी श्रीलंका के बेहतरीन गुफा मंदिरों में से एक है, जो तांगले से 200 मीटर अंदर ग्रेनाइट चट्टान पर बनाया गया है। चट्टानों को काटकर बनाई गई सीढ़ियाँ गुफा मंदिरों से सुसज्जित पाँच सीढ़ीदार स्तरों से होकर गुजरती हैं, प्रत्येक में लेटे हुए और बैठे हुए बुद्ध की मूर्तियाँ, चित्रित छतें और प्राचीन शिलालेख हैं। शिखर स्तूप आसपास के जंगल और धान का मनोरम दृश्य प्रस्तुत करता है। इसे अक्सर 'छोटा सिगिरिया' कहा जाता है, यह द्वीप के प्रसिद्ध गुफा मंदिरों का एक फायदेमंद और बहुत कम भीड़ वाला विकल्प है।

इतिहास

The monastery is traditionally said to be one of the temples founded by King Kavantissa around the 3rd century BCE. Ancient Brahmi inscriptions confirm that monks occupied the caves by the 2nd century BCE, making it among the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world. It fell into neglect for centuries before King Kirti Sri Rajasinha of Kandy sponsored its restoration in the 18th century; palm-leaf manuscripts found here later aided the translation of the Mahavamsa chronicle.
