Buttala

Buttala

A quiet rural town in the heart of the Monaragala District, surrounded by ancient stupas and Buddha statues from the old kingdom of Ruhuna.

Overview

Buttala is a small agricultural town set among paddy fields and scrub jungle east of Wellawaya, and it is the natural base for the district's cluster of archaeological wonders. Within easy reach lie the towering free-standing Buddha statue at Maligawila, the colossal ancient stupa at Yudaganawa, and the historic Dematamal Viharaya, all remnants of the region's long Buddhist heritage. The pace is unhurried and the landscape rural, giving visitors an authentic taste of the dry-zone interior far from the tourist trail.

History

The Buttala area lay within the ancient kingdom of Ruhuna, the southern realm that served as a refuge and rallying point for Sinhalese kings, and it is closely tied in legend to King Dutugemunu, who is said to have sheltered near here during his campaigns. The scatter of early stupas and statues around the town reflects centuries of royal patronage and the deep roots of Buddhism in south-eastern Sri Lanka.
