Puthukkudiyiruppu

An inland town in southern Mullaitivu District, the base for visiting the war museum, the Victory Monument and the Sea Tigers submarine yard from the final battles of the civil war.

Overview

Puthukkudiyiruppu, often shortened to PTK, is a small town in the interior of Mullaitivu District that sat at the heart of the last stand of the LTTE in 2009. Today it is best known as the access point for a cluster of civil-war sites: the army-run war museum with its captured LTTE vehicles and weapons, the Victory Monument commemorating the end of the conflict, and the nearby Sea Tigers submarine and boat yard hidden in the surrounding scrub. Set among paddy fields and returning farming villages, it is a sobering but historically compelling stop for those wanting to understand the end of the war.

History

Puthukkudiyiruppu became one of the final battlegrounds of the Sri Lankan civil war in early 2009, as government forces pushed the LTTE into an ever-shrinking pocket around Mullaitivu. It was here and in the surrounding area that the Sri Lanka Army uncovered the Sea Tigers' clandestine boatyards, where the LTTE's naval wing had built submarines, semi-submersibles and attack craft. After the war ended in May 2009, several of these sites were preserved and opened as war memorials and museums.
