The island that keeps every age happy

Calm lagoon beaches, elephants in the wild, turtle hatcheries and a slow blue train through tea country — Sri Lanka is one of Asia's easiest and most rewarding family destinations.

Distances in Sri Lanka are short, which matters enormously when you travel with children: most hops between beach, safari and hill country are two to four hours, and every day ends with something memorable. Family rooms are common, hotels routinely add extra beds, and Sri Lankans famously adore children — expect your kids to be welcomed everywhere from roadside kottu shops to five-star resorts.

Build your trip around a beach base on the south coast, a gentle one-day safari where elephants are all but guaranteed, and the famous train ride through the tea fields. Add a turtle hatchery near Rekawa, a swim in a calm bay like Unawatuna, and plenty of pool time, and you have a week children will still talk about years later.

Sri Lanka's beaches split neatly across two seasons. From December to April the south and west coasts shine: golden crescents like Mirissa and Unawatuna, the long resort sands of Bentota, and the quiet coves around Tangalle enjoy calm seas and blue skies. From May to September the action flips to the east, where Nilaveli's powder-white sand, Pasikuda's shallow reef-sheltered bay, and Arugam Bay's surf come into their own. Whichever month you travel, roughly half the island's coastline is in season, so pick your beach by the calendar and you will rarely be disappointed.

Few countries offer safari experiences as accessible as Sri Lanka's. Within a few hours of any coast you can watch leopards patrol Yala's scrub jungle, see hundreds of elephants converge on the Minneriya reservoir during the dry-season Gathering, or scan Wilpattu's forest lakes from a quiet jeep track. Beyond the big-ticket mammals, Bundala's lagoons teem with flamingos and shorebirds, Horton Plains protects cloud forest ending at the sheer drop of World's End, and Sinharaja shelters most of the island's endemic birds. Each park has its own season and specialty, so it pays to match the park to your wishlist.

Sri Lanka's British-era railway is a destination in itself: slow, cheap, and threading some of the most beautiful country on the island. The celebrated main line climbs from Kandy through tea estates, pine forest, and mist to Ella, past the Nine Arch Bridge and the ingenious Demodara spiral loop. The coastal line skims so close to the Indian Ocean south of Colombo that spray reaches the carriages, and the rebuilt northern line runs through the dry-zone plains to Jaffna. Book reserved seats ahead on the hill country stretch, or ride unreserved with the doors open like the locals do.

Sri Lanka's central highlands wring the moisture out of two monsoons and send it tumbling off the escarpments in hundreds of waterfalls, from roadside cascades to multi-tier giants hidden behind tea estates. The tallest, Bambarakanda, drops 263 metres through pine forest, while Diyaluma's terraced upper pools have become one of the island's most photographed natural swimming spots. Most of the famous falls cluster around the hill country roads between Kitulgala, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and Badulla, making them easy to string together on a tea country road trip. They are at their thundering best just after the rains, from October to January.
