雷卡瓦是斯里兰卡最重要的海龟筑巢海滩之一，这是一个安静的渔村海岸，有多达五种海龟，包括绿海龟和橄榄丽龟，在天黑后拖出海龟产卵。当地保护项目运营的夜间海龟导览服务让游客可以通过红光观察野外筑巢的海龟，而不会打扰它们。白天，这里是一片宁静、未开发的海滩，背靠泻湖和灌木丛，远离繁忙的度假胜地。

历史

Turtle conservation at Rekawa began in the 1990s when the Turtle Conservation Project established a community-based nest-protection programme, employing former egg poachers as nest protectors. In 2006 the beach was declared a wildlife sanctuary by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, cementing its status as a model for in-situ marine turtle protection in Sri Lanka.
