A compact Portuguese-Dutch fort on Puliyanthivu island, ringed by the lagoon and a canal, at the heart of the old city.

Overview

Batticaloa Fort is a small, square colonial fort with four corner bastions, protected on two sides by the Batticaloa Lagoon and on the others by a canal. One of the best-preserved Dutch forts on the east coast, its thick coral-and-stone ramparts enclose old colonial buildings now used by government offices, and the walls offer breezy views over the lagoon and city. It is an easy, atmospheric stop in the heart of the old town.

History

The Portuguese completed a fort here in 1628, which the Dutch captured in 1638 and largely rebuilt from 1665, adding its fortified bastions. The British took control in 1795. The fort has survived in reasonable condition and today houses several local government departments within its old walls.
