A large ancient reservoir on the edge of the town centre, with a lakeside path and views across the water to the elephant rock.

Overview

Kurunegala Lake is a big man-made tank on the fringe of the central town, a calm sheet of water that mirrors Ethagala and the surrounding rocks. A lakeside road and walking path make it a pleasant spot for an early-morning or evening stroll, with birdlife along the shallows and a small island shrine. It is an easy, free way to escape the bustle of the town centre.

History

The reservoir was built to supply water to the town and its paddy fields and, like many of the island's tanks, has origins in the ancient irrigation tradition of the dry zone. It still serves as a water source for Kurunegala and forms the scenic centrepiece of the town.
