A vividly painted Hindu temple in the town centre with a towering gopuram covered in hundreds of Dravidian figures.

Overview

The Sri Muthumariamman kovil is one of Matale's most striking landmarks, dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, associated with rain and protection from disease. Its rainbow-coloured gopuram tower rises over the town, densely carved with deities, and the interior halls are richly decorated. It is an active place of worship and comes alive during festival days.

History

The temple traces its origins to 1852, when a landlord gifted a former paddy field for its construction, with the main shrine established in 1874 with funding from the Nattukottai Chettiar merchant community. It has been expanded and repainted many times since.
