Matale

Matale

A bustling spice-country town north of Kandy, wrapped in hills and famous for its cave temple, Hindu kovil and roadside spice gardens.

Overview

Matale is the district capital, sitting at around 360 m in a broad valley on the main road from Kandy to Dambulla. It is the heart of Sri Lanka's spice belt, and dozens of spice and herbal gardens line the approach roads offering tours of cardamom, cinnamon, pepper and nutmeg. The town itself is anchored by the Aluvihare Rock Temple, where the Buddhist Pali Canon was first written down, and by the colourful Sri Muthumariamman Hindu temple with its towering gopuram.

History

Matale was a strategic town in the Kandyan Kingdom and the site of the 1848 Matale Rebellion against British rule, led by Weera Puran Appu and Gongalegoda Banda. Its most famous heritage is far older: at nearby Aluvihare in the 1st century BC, monks committed the Buddha's oral teachings to writing for the first time, preserving the Tripitaka on palm leaves.
