Riverston Peak and Gap

A windswept viewpoint on the western edge of the Knuckles Range, with sweeping views over montane grasslands and valleys.

Overview

Riverston is a high, breezy ridge on the western flank of the Knuckles Mountain Range, reached by a scenic road that climbs through grassland and cloud forest. The Riverston Gap, nicknamed the windy gap, funnels fierce gusts across the ridge, while short walks lead to panoramic viewpoints and a telecom-tower peak at around 1,440 m. It forms part of the Knuckles Conservation Forest, one of the components of the Central Highlands UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

The Knuckles Range, called Dumbara Kanduvetiya in Sinhala, was named by British surveyors for its fist-like peaks. Its montane forests and grasslands were inscribed in 2010 as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage Site for their exceptional endemic biodiversity.
