Overview

The Medirigiriya Vatadage is one of the most beautifully proportioned monuments in the region, set atop a small rocky rise reached by a long flight of stone steps. A central stupa is encircled by three concentric rings of finely dressed granite pillars and four seated Buddha statues facing the cardinal directions. Far quieter than the main Polonnaruwa ruins, its peaceful hilltop setting and elegant symmetry make the drive out worthwhile for those with extra time.

History

A monastery has stood at Medirigiriya since at least the 2nd century CE, when King Kanitthatissa is recorded to have built a chapter house here. The vatadage seen today was built around the 7th century CE, enclosing an earlier stupa, and the site remained an active place of worship until about the 13th century before being lost to the jungle and later restored.
