An ancient and important Hindu temple complex near Chilaw, one of the five sacred Shiva shrines (Pancha Ishwaram) of Sri Lanka.

Overview

Munneswaram is a venerable Hindu temple complex a few kilometres east of Chilaw, dedicated principally to Shiva and revered as one of the island's five ancient Ishwaram temples. The complex is actually a group of shrines, with the large central Shiva temple flanked by smaller temples to Ganesha, Ayyanar and the goddess Kali, plus a Buddhist temple, reflecting the mixed communities who worship here. Its towering, sculpture-covered gopuram and busy ritual life make it a vivid stop, and it draws vast crowds during its annual festivals.

History

Munneswaram has existed since at least around 1000 CE and is linked in legend to the Ramayana, with tradition holding that Rama worshipped Shiva here. The temple was largely destroyed by the Portuguese in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, who built a Catholic chapel over its base, and was later rebuilt by local Hindus and Sri Lankan kings. It remains one of the most important Shiva temples in the country, famed for its month-long festival held around August and September.
