Overview

The Archaeological Museum of Vavuniya is a compact regional museum run by the Department of Archaeology, gathering finds from across the surrounding Vanni. Its galleries hold statues of the Buddha, Hindu deities, ancient pottery and inscriptions, alongside a few colonial-era Christian objects such as a stone baptismal font, together spanning roughly the fifth to eighth centuries and beyond. It is an easy, air-cooled stop that helps make sense of the district's layered history, and entry is free.

History

The museum was founded and is administered by the Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka as the regional museum for the Northern Province's Vanni region, collecting and displaying archaeological objects found in the Vavuniya area and its surroundings.
