Overview

The Vavuniya Tank, or Vavuniya Kulam, is a broad irrigation reservoir on the northern edge of town near Rambaikulam. Its calm waters and grassy bunds make a quiet retreat from the busy town centre, especially at dawn and dusk when egrets, herons and other waterbirds gather along the shallows. Like the many other tanks that dot the district, it is part of the ancient dry-zone system that has watered paddy fields here for centuries.

History

The tank is one of the many irrigation reservoirs that sustain agriculture across the Vavuniya dry zone, part of a tradition of tank-fed cultivation in the Vanni that stretches back to antiquity and was expanded under later development schemes.
