Seven colossal figures carved into a rock face around a 15 m standing Buddha, the tallest such rock-cut Buddha in Sri Lanka and a rare Mahayana site.
Wellawaya
A dry-zone crossroads town at the foot of the Uva hills, the handiest base for the Buduruwagala rock carvings and a gateway between the highlands and the south-east.
Overview
Wellawaya sits where the roads down from Ella and the hill country meet the lowland routes to Monaragala, Kataragama and the south-east. A modest market town rather than a resort, it makes a practical base for exploring the district's greatest treasure, the Buduruwagala rock-cut Buddhist figures a short drive south, and for breaking the journey between the cool highlands and the dry-zone plains. The surrounding countryside of paddy, scrub jungle and distant escarpments turns golden in the dry months and green after the rains.
History
Wellawaya lies within the Ruhunu heartland that was settled and cultivated in ancient times, and the area is dotted with early Buddhist sites reflecting the spread of the faith through south-eastern Sri Lanka. In the colonial and modern eras the town grew as a road junction linking the Uva highlands with the dry-zone interior, a role it still plays today as a stop on the busy Colombo-Batticaloa and hill-country routes.

Travel tips
- Base yourself here to visit Buduruwagala early, before the midday heat and tour groups arrive.
- The dry-zone sun is fierce; carry water, a hat and sun protection whenever you leave the vehicle.
- Agree tuk-tuk fares in advance for the round trip to Buduruwagala, as there is little public transport on that road.
- Dress modestly and remove shoes at temples and rock-carving sites, and carry socks for the hot ground.
- Fuel up and draw cash in town, as facilities thin out on the roads to the outlying ancient sites.
