Hambantota is the district capital and a growing port town on Sri Lanka's arid south-east coast, its shoreline fringed by salt pans (lewayas), scrub and long windswept beaches. Long a quiet fishing and salt-producing settlement with a distinctive Malay and Muslim heritage, it has expanded rapidly around a large deep-water port and international airport. For travellers it serves as a base for the drive-through Ridiyagama Safari Park, the birdlife of Bundala, and the ancient rock temple of Mulkirigala to the west.
Hambantota's name is often linked to the sampans (small boats) of Malay and other seafaring traders who settled here, and the town retains a notable Malay and Muslim community to this day. It was a modest salt-producing and fishing port under successive Dutch and British administrations. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated the town, and in the years since it has been transformed by large-scale development including a deep-water harbour, an international airport and conference facilities.
