星堡是马塔拉最具特色的地标之一，是荷兰人在尼尔瓦拉河东岸修建的一座虽小但形状完美的六角防御工事。它的大门上刻有荷兰东印度公司的徽章和建造日期，里面有前士兵宿舍、弹药库和监狱牢房，其中一些现在设有一座简陋的博物馆，展示该镇的殖民历史。其几何星形形状使防御者可以从每个堡垒进行交火。

历史

The fort was built in 1765, after a local rebellion in 1761 had overrun the main Matara Fort and exposed its vulnerability to land attack. Named Redoute Van Eck after the Dutch governor of the time, the small star fort was designed to guard the river crossing and the approaches to the town. It survives largely intact as a rare example of a compact Dutch star fortification in Sri Lanka.
