Overview

Bathalegala, popularly known as Bible Rock, is a striking mountain near Aranayake in the Kegalle District whose flat, elongated summit resembles an open book on a lectern, earning it its English name. Often called a 'mini Sigiriya', the roughly 670 m peak is climbed on a scenic trail with a steeper final section, and the broad top rewards hikers with sweeping views over the surrounding hills, tea country and, on a clear day, distant Adam's Peak. A small abandoned temple and stupa sit on the summit.

History

The rock takes its English name from British colonial planters, who thought its shape resembled a Bible open on a stand. Its flat summit long served as a landmark on the route between the coast and the Kandyan highlands, and the ruins of an old temple on top reflect its historic use as a place of retreat and worship.
