Nilaveli
A long, palm-fringed beach village north of Trincomalee, the launch point for snorkelling trips to Pigeon Island.
Overview
Nilaveli is a relaxed strip of wide white-sand beach about 16 km north of Trincomalee, quieter and more spread out than the city beaches. Its shallow, warm water is ideal for swimming, and glass-clear reefs lie just offshore. Most visitors come to catch a short boat across to Pigeon Island National Park to snorkel among reef fish and blacktip reef sharks. A scatter of guesthouses and beach resorts line the shore behind the coconut palms.
History
Like much of the east coast, Nilaveli was heavily affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and by the long civil conflict, both of which held back tourism for years. Since the end of the war in 2009 it has steadily recovered as one of the east's most popular beach escapes.

Travel tips
- Buy Pigeon Island park tickets at the mainland ticket office before boarding a boat.
- Bring or rent a mask and reef-safe sunscreen; the reef fish and small sharks are easy to spot in the shallows.
- Go early in the morning when the sea is calmest and the reef least crowded.
- Watch for strong currents on some days and swim where locals and lifeguards indicate.
- There are few shops, so bring water, snacks and cash from Trincomalee.
